Dispensing Opticians help fit eyeglasses and contact lenses following
an eye exam from Ophthalmologist and/or Optometrists. They, also,
help customers decide which eyeglass frames or contact lenses to
Most Dispensing Opticians work in store front offices that sell eyeglasses,
contact lenses, visual aids and other optical goods … like Pearle Vision,
For Eyes or Lens Crafters.
Opticians typically have a high school diploma or equivalent. They are
generally hired on an OJT (On The Job Training) basis. Some enter the
field with an Associate’s degree or a certificate from a community college.
The advantage of the OJT method is that you are being paid while you
learn … advancing as you learn.
About half of the states require Dispensing Opticians to be licensed
and certified … Illinois is one of them. The tests and exams are not
hard making the field easy to get into with the cooperation of eye centers

The pay for complete certification is around $35,000 yearly, based on
United States median wage reports made in May of 2014. In 2015 the
same reports showed the median wages went up to $38,000 and is
increasing going into 2016.
The employment statistics is projected to grow 25% between 2015 and
2024. The occupation has been projected to be growing much faster
than the average for all occupations.
