DISPENSING OPTICIANS

| July 12, 2016

Find a job and career as a DISPENSING OPTICIAN …
What DISPENSING OPTICIANS DO …
Dispensing Opticians help fit eyeglasses and contact lenses following
an eye exam from Ophthalmologist and/or Optometrists. They, also,
help customers decide which eyeglass frames or contact lenses to
buy.
Most Dispensing Opticians work in store front offices that sell eyeglasses,
contact lenses, visual aids and other optical goods … like Pearle Vision,
For Eyes or Lens Crafters.
Opticians typically have a high school diploma or equivalent. They are
generally hired on an OJT (On The Job Training) basis. Some enter the
field with an Associate’s degree or a certificate from a community college.
The advantage of the OJT method is that you are being paid while you
learn … advancing as you learn.
About half of the states require Dispensing Opticians to be licensed
and certified … Illinois is one of them. The tests and exams are not
hard making the field easy to get into with the cooperation of eye centers
that hire and train. A listing of eye centers that provides this training
can be found under www.indeed.com/jobs … follow the Optical+Training
icon.
The pay for complete certification is around $35,000 yearly, based on
United States median wage reports made in May of 2014. In 2015 the
same reports showed the median wages went up to $38,000 and is
increasing going into 2016.
The employment statistics is projected to grow 25% between 2015 and
2024. The occupation has been projected to be growing much faster
than the average for all occupations.
