Book Clubs!   second Monday of the Month

Starting in 2013, you’ll notice a change in our Book Club format. The Book Club has been split up into two groups, representing Fiction and Non- Fiction books, respectively. The Fiction Book Club will meet every other month, starting in January. The Non-Fiction Book Club will meet every other month, starting in February.

We also want to start a Sharing club where readers come together each month to recommend one book to other readers.   We will meet at 2 pm on the Second Sunday of the Month.  If you can’t come, feel free to share your favorite read  by going to www.fppld.org   and submitting your recommendation.

Read Across America” at your library!       January -March

The Adult and Teen Winter Reading Program ,“Read Across America” runs from January 7 – March 9.  Signup at the Reference Desk starting on January 7, when you’ll receive your reading packet with reading logs, bookmark, and pen.  Read or listen to as many books, eBooks, or audiobooks as you can for a chance of winning prizes. Prizes for adults include gift cards f r o m Jewel Osco, Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. Teens will have a chance to win gift cards from iTunes, Google Play, or Harlem Irving Plaza. We’ve increased our goal to 400 total books read uring the program, and you can help us meet this goal by participating.  this year we’ll be offering a special, travel themed gift basket as a grand prize. Play our “Read Across America” map game for chances to win the grand prize. Join with your community this winter as we “Read Across America!” 

Friendship Quilt Club                                                                        Wednesday, January 2 at 10 am

Get the New Year Started by tackling the “UFO” in your closet, that crazy quilt you started  and never completed. Come share quilting tips and projects with other quilters!  Beginners are always welcome.

Conversation Circle                                                                                Tuesday, January 8 at 7 pm

Starting weekly on Tuesday, January 8 , English language learners can join us for the opportunity to practice their conversation skills in a friendly and informal environment.  All are welcome!

Supporting Your High School Student                                          Wednesday, January 9 at 7-8 pm

In this workshop presented by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission,  parents and students will get the facts on student loans, financial aid, college value, and more.

Join us on the second Friday of each month for a new movie!

Knit & Crochet Group                                                                                    Saturday, January 12 at 1 pm

Join us on the second Saturday of each month to learn tips for knitting and crocheting or to share projects you’re working on.

Reading Club                                                                                           Monday, January 14 at 7 pm

Join the discussion of Kim Edwards’ riveting page turner, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter. Be prepared to explore “deception, family secrets, the influence of the past on the present.”

Credit Card Education                                                                            Tuesday, January 22 at 6 pm

Take Charge Illinois, a program launched by Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka to assist Illinois residents in regaining their financial footing presents this program.  You’ll learn how to comparison shop for credit cards, better understand credit card statements, and review credit scores and history.

Fill Out Your FAFSA                                                                    Saturday, January 12, 11 am-1 pm

Don’t miss out on all the available scholarships and financial aid! The Illinois Student Assistance Commission will be at the library to help you complete and file your FAFSA. Estimates may be used if you have not filed your income tax return.  Lunch will be provided. Space is limited and registration is required.

Teen Tech Week ideas are on the agenda.

 

The library is calling for gently-used, clean, formal dresses for our upcoming “Once Upon a Prom” event in April, 2013. Dresses will be given away to local teens to wear to the prom!

The library  will also accept gently-used men’s suits and tuxedos.

 All donations must be clean and in pristine condition. Dresses and suits must be on  hangers.

 Donations will be accepted January 7 through March 15 during regular library hours only.
