WEST LEYDEN INDUCTS NEWEST NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY MEMBERS
The West Leyden chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 39 new members into the organization on Monday, March 18, 2013, in the auditorium of the school. The candidates were selected from a pool of 240 eligible students by a faculty committee. Criteria for selection is based on each candidate’s character, academic excellence, service to the school and the community, and outstanding leadership skills.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH BREAKFAST AT WEST LEYDEN
The following West Leyden High School students were honored at the Student of the Month Breakfast held on Thursday, April 4, 2013, in the Eagle’s Wing at the school. EAST LEYDEN RECEIVES 2011 EDUCATIONAL ALLIANCE GRANT
East Leyden High School has received a $500 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program to support the school’s mathematics curriculum. B & D Gasoline, Inc. of 9000 West Belmont Avenue in Franklin Park worked with school officials to secure the grant, which was made possible by funding from the ExxonMobil Corporation.
The ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program is designed to provide Exxon and Mobil retailers with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through educational grants to neighborhood schools. ExxonMobil believes that as members of the community, local retailers are best qualified to work with local educators to help identify schools and programs most in need of support.
B & D Gasoline, Inc. met stringent eligibility criteria before applying for and being awarded this grant, including having a commitment to provide a superior buying experience for customers.
WEST LEYDEN SCIENCE OLYMPIAD REGIONAL MEDALISTS

DISTRICT 212 OFFERS ANNUAL LEYDEN SPORTS ACADEMY
Leyden High School District 212 athletic department is offering its annual Leyden Sports Academy (LSA) this June. The four-day sports camp will be held on Monday and Tuesday, June 3 and 4, at the East campus, 3400 Rose St., Franklin Park; and on Wednesday and Thursday, June 5 and 6, at the West campus, 1000 N. Wolf Rd., Northlake. The camp is free to all incoming freshmen attending Leyden high schools as well as students entering 8th grade.
The sports academy is designed to help incoming freshmen – athletes and non-athletes – identify the characteristics that define a champion in the classroom and on the playing field. Participants will have the opportunity to sample many of Leyden’s sports programs, to meet with the coaching staff, and to talk with Leyden varsity athletes.
The goal is to provide participants with a rewarding, memorable experience; and to help students make the transition from Jr. High and middle school to high school.
Leyden Sports Academy participants can also enroll in any of Leyden’s two-week, sports-specific summer camps for a nominal fee.

DISTRICT 212 SUMMER RECREATION PROGRAM
Leyden High School District 212 is offering the 2013 Summer Recreation Program to students who live in District 212.
The program offers numerous sports activities for both boys and girls and includes baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.
The fee for students in grades 9-12 is $40 for one camp and $10 for each additional camp. The fee for students in lower grade levels is contingent on the activity.

DISTRICT 212 SUMMER LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN
The summer session of Leyden’s Learn to Swim Program for children ages 3 to 13 will be held in three two-week sessions, Monday through Thursday, beginning with Session I, June 10 – June 20, Session II, June 24 – July 5, and Session III, July 8 – July 18.
Class times are 9:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. Each class is 35 minutes long. Sessions will be held at West Leyden High School, 1000 N. Wolf Rd, Northlake. The in-district fee is $40 per session, and the out-of-district fee is $45 per session.
The program covers skills that include water orientation and safety to advanced stroke techniques.

DISTRICT 212 HOSTS 2013 EAGLE SCRAMBLE
The Athletic Department at Leyden High School District 212 is hosting the 2013 Eagle Scramble golf outing on Thursday, June 6, 2013, beginning at noon at White Pines Golf Club, 500 W. Jefferson St., Bensenville. The cost is $125 per player for the 4-person scramble and includes 18 holes of golf with a cart and dinner. The event also features contests and raffles.
Pertinent times include registration beginning at noon; free range balls from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.; call to carts at 1:15 p.m.; and the Scramble shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Dinner, golf, awards, and the raffle will begin at 7:00 p.m.
The golf outing helps support district athletic programs and the Leyden Athletic Scholarship Fund that benefits Leyden student-athletes.
The registration and payment deadline is Friday, May 24. DISTRICT 212 HOSTS 25TH ANNUAL WILLIAM H. FERN AWARDS CEREMONY
Students, faculty, and staff from Leyden High School District 212 were honored at the 25TH Annual William H. Fern Award Ceremony held on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. in the auditorium at West Leyden High School.
The awards were instituted by William Fern, a former District 212 teacher who began the award program after he retired from teaching several years ago. Award winners include high school juniors, teachers, and staff members.
Faculty and staff choose the winners by voting for those who have exhibited extraordinary effort, talent, and dedication to their goals and work. In recognition of their accomplishments, each winner receives a monetary gift from Fern.

DISTRICT 212 PRESCHOOL PROGRAM REGISTRATION
Leyden High School District 212 is currently holding registration for its preschool program for 3- and 4-year-olds. The program is held at both the East and West campuses and begins September 19 through early December; and from late January through early May.
At East Leyden, the program will be in session from 8:20 a.m. to 10:10 a.m., on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. At West Leyden, the program will be in session from 10:20 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The cost is $60 per child and is open to in district preschoolers only. Children are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis.
