Leyden High School District 212 presents The Girls of the Garden Club

THE GIRLS OF THE GARDEN CLUB AT LEYDEN

Leyden High School District 212 production of The Girls of the Garden Club will debut at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12 and 19, and Saturday, October 13 and 20 in the auditorium at East Leyden High School, 3400 Rose St., Franklin Park.  Talented student-thespians from both campuses are included in the cast and crew.

Based on the comedy by Tony Award-winning playwright and Pulitzer Prize winner John Patrick, the play revolves around the campaign to win the presidency of a garden club.

Gardening and winning the presidency is everything to Rhoda Greenleaf, but then there is Lillybelle, the incumbent who seasons her speech with French phrases and is generally a bit overbearing.  How to oust Lillybelle and install herself as president becomes Rhoda’s fixation, an obsession that pushes her husband, children, and home to the sideline as she pursues her goal.

Rhoda’s campaign seems doomed until her daughter’s boyfriend comes up with a clever idea that is a sure winner.  A winner, that is, until complications arise and the ruse appears to have failed.  After several twists and turns, it is a “plant” that decides the fate of the presidency.

Admission is $2 for students and $3 for adults.  For more information, go to www.leyden212.org/finearts.

As an added perk, on October 12 and 13, Crossing the Line, a 40 minute student-directed play that addresses teenage drinking and driving, will be staged at 5:00 p.m. in the Little Theater at East Leyden before The Girls of the Garden Club performance. Admission to this performance is a free will donation with proceeds going to SADD; or a non-perishable food item for the Leyden Food Pantry.
