May 9th- Mother’s Day craft. For ages 8 and up. Make a memorable gift to give to mom. Limit 24. Registration is required, 4:30-5:30pm.

May 11th- Science Saturday. For grades 3 and up. Explore the wonders of science with hands-on experiments and fun demonstrations. Limit 24. Registration is required, 2-3:30pm.

May 17th- Container Gardening. No matter what you prefer to plant — vegetables, flowers, shrubs, trees — you can plant some version of it in a container. Lets start with a mini herb garden. All materials provided. Sign up required. Space is limited, 1-2pm.

May 21st- Community book club. Book clubs invoke a like-minded community by bringing together people with a passion for reading. Book clubs promote friendship, stimulate intellectual conversation and broaden knowledge through reading. Pick up your copy of our selected title at the reference desk. Third Tuesday of the month, 7-8 p.m

May 23rd- Cooking: Healthy Mexican. Join us in the kitchen as we convert the most delicious Mexican dishes into healthy alternatives. This is a bilingual program for all ages. Bring your appetite as we’ll be sampling our creations. Sign up required, 6:30-7:30pm.

May 6th or 8th- A Brush with Art: Sun String Paintings. Learn how to turn simple string, nails and wood into complex and beautiful string art! We will create images of a sun by painting a central design onto wood plaques and then outlining the sun shape with nails. By wrapping colored string from nail to nail we will create a sunburst effect around the painting. Supplies will be provided. Creations from the class will be on display at the library and then are yours to keep. Sign up Monday or Wednesday. Ages 8 and up. 6:30-8:30pm.

May 7th- I Want to Cook! Pasta Salad.  Come cook with us! It’s time for fresh pasta salad! Please bring an apron, 7-8:30.

May 8th- Handling Stress- Wellness Chiropractor. Dr. Jeffrey C. Smith, Doctor of Chiropractic, will teach you techniques to laugh your way through stress, increase your energy, and live a longer life, in his informative and humorous presentation. Free, 7-9pm.

May 9th- Mother’s Day Tea. Celebrating Mother’s Day with tea, snacks and a craft! Ages  3 – 8. 11am-12pm.

May 10th- How to be an Online Detective!  Join in exploring the world of online public records and show how you can use this information to locate people and find out more about them, 2-3pm.

May 14th- Potluck Book Club.  The Book Club meets monthly to share dishes made from a common cookbook. This month, we will be cooking from The Art of Simple Food by Alice Waters. You must bring a dish that you made from the book to participate. Copies of the book are available for extended checkout at the Circulation Desk 1 month before the discussion. Please include your email address when signing up, 6-7pm.

May 20th- Creating and using computer files. Want to learn what is means to save something on a computer or flash drive? What kind of stuff can you save? What’s a flash drive anyway? Need to upload a resume to a job application? These questions and more will be answered in this introductory class to saving and working with files, 2-3pm.

May 21st- Drop In Tech Help.  Bring your tablet, smartphone, eReader, or laptop in for help getting started with accessing the Internet, learning your device’s features, and using the Library’s digital services. We can also help you with email, social networking or general Internet questions, 7-8pm.

May 22nd- Popular Science: Bristlebot! In this new series, we’ll be exploring popular science, life-hacking, and other interesting projects to share with family and friends. Build a Bristlebot! Bring an old toothbrush, preferably one with a large head, and we’ll supply the rest. Age 12 and up, 7-8pm.

May 23rd- Read It – Make It Book Club: Geek Dad’s Guide to Weekend Fun. This month we will play around with the geekier side of crafts and make marbled paper with shaving cream and food coloring! Supplies will be provided. Book is available at the Circulation Desk one month before Book club meeting. 7-8pm.

May 28th- Trivia Night at Circle Inn! Trivia Night is Back! Join us at Circle Inn (7707 Westwood Drive) for a night of Trivia. Bring your friends and form a team of up to 4 people or meet new people and team up. We’ll have prizes for the winners! 7-9pm.

May 7th & 9th- Microsoft Word.  Learn the basics of using MS Word. $20 Fee includes Part 1 & 2 of this Microsoft Word class. Must register and attend both sessions. 7-8:30pm.

May 8th- Build your Resume Online. Come prepared with your work history and we’ll show you how to create a beautiful resume in one of 5 classic styles. Your resume will be created in a PDF format that you can send off to prospective employers or print, 7-8pm.

May 11th- Mini Book Sale, 2-4pm.

May 17th- Basic Online Safety. Learn how to keep your information safe when browsing the internet. We will discuss passwords, antivirus software and malicious downloads. 3-4pm.

May 20th- Adult pen and ink writers group. 6:30-8:45pm.

May 22nd- Individual Computer Help.  If you have a computer question that you need help with, sign up for one 25 minute time slot with a technology clerk.Register early and come prepared with a list of questions that you would like to ask, or a specific thing you want to learn more about. 6:30-8:15pm, register for your session.

May 23rd- Make a leather wristband craft. Join Sara from The Chicago School of Shoemaking and learn how to cut, decorate and finish your own leather wristband. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or dusty, $20 fee.

May 25th- Mini Book sale, 2-4pm.

May 28th- Internet Plus. This class is meant to follow the Internet for Beginners class and will cover topics like searching, bookmarks, and online safety, 7-8pm.

May 31st- Senior Spelling bee!  Adults 50 and older compete in local spelling bees throughout the state. Champions progress to regional competitions to be held June-July 2013. The final level of competition concludes at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield on Senior Citizen’s Day on August 12, 2013. Join us from 1-5pm.

May 2nd- Lego Club! Kids in grades K-5th will be able to make Lego creations together at the library. Kids from ages 3-5 are welcome if a parent attends with them. Registration is required.

May 4th- Fitness Walk! Kick off Health and Fitness Month at your library with a fitness walk! Join us at 11am as we walk together around the neighborhood.

May 7th- Community Safety Day. The American Red Cross will be joining us to teach us about disaster preparedness and emergency care. Starts at 7pm.

May 8th- Historical Society, 6:30-8:30pm.

May 11th- Third annual health fair! Representatives from Westlake Hospital will provide health information a number of free health screenings. Free Health Screenings for Glucose, Cholesterol, Bone Density, Blood Pressure and BMI. 10am-1pm.

May 13th- Library Board Meeting, 7-9pm.

May 18th- Zumba! We’re partnering up with the Veterans Park District to give you a chance to try a free Zumba class at 11:30am.

May 1st- Mom’s Are Everything! Join the library from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and craft up a little something to let her know how special she is. There is a limit of 20 children for this craft. Please sign up in the Youth Services room.

May 8th- Mother’s Day Surprise! Visit the library from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and surprise mom with decorating some yummy no-bake treats! There is a limit of 15 children limited to ages 6-14 for this craft!! Please sign-up in the Youth Services Room.

May 14th- Visit the library 6:30-7:30 p.m. and hear some stories that will get you ready to head out into our Summer Reading Program. Please sign-up in the Youth Services room.

May 25th- Introduction to basic computer function. The library will be offering an introduction to basic computer functions on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m. No prior computer knowledge is necessary. By the end of this session participants will become familiar with fundamental mouse and keyboard functions and be able to search the internet.

There is a limit of 6 adults for each computer class and is limited to Schiller Park residents only. There will be a $10 refundable deposit required at the time of sign-up that will be returned on the class date. Please sign-up in the Youth Services Room.

Reading Time is held every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Youth Services Room, all ages are welcome! No signup needed!
