Annual West Suburban Artists Guild Exhibition, Triton College Art Gallery

The West Suburban Artists Guild, a longtime community-based partner with Triton College, returns with new works by member artists. Guild members work in a variety of media to produce works ranging from comforting to challenging. A closing reception is scheduled from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 in the art gallery. The reception is a gala event, featuring food, fun, music and prizes presented to the artists. The guild continues to support the art of Triton’s students. Students who’d like to learn more about Triton’s many programs should attend Discover Triton: Explore Your Opportunities, a program that will highlight a different Triton area of study each month. Students can hear from faculty and tour the classrooms and labs for that respective program, as well as receive information on admission and financial aid. Social Media Career Workshop, 5:30 to 7 p.m., Room B-111 of the Student Center (B-Building)

Triton College Information Technology faculty member Mike McGuire will host a free workshop on how to effectively utilize social media in one’s job search. Topics to be discussed will include how to develop one’s brand and build up network contacts for such social media platforms, as Facebook, Twitter, blogs and LinkedIn. The workshop is open to current and former Triton students, Triton staff and faculty and community members for free. Refreshments will be served. Annual Berwyn Art League Exhibition, Triton College Art Gallery

The Berwyn Art League returns with an eclectic mix of painting, photography, drawing and other media. Each year, this group of committed artists shares their best work of the year with this exhibit. Fall College Visit Day, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Student Center (B-Building)

High school students interested in learning more about Triton College will benefit from attending Fall College Visit Day. Prospective students can learn about the college experience from students and faculty, tour Triton’s campus, attend information sessions on a variety of topics and talk to financial aid and admission representatives on how to finance their education and successfully enroll in college. Linal Harris, Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at U.S. Cellular, will serve as the guest speaker, sharing his story of his road to success and how a higher education helped him to reach his goals in life. Wind Ensemble Program, 7:30 p.m., Performing Arts Center of the Robert M. Collins Center (R-Building)

Members of the community band will form ensembles to present a program of literature written for small combinations of brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. This program may also present outstanding soloists. Music performed is drawn from the classical, romantic and contemporary periods. Charles Groeling is the music conductor. “Fuddy Meers,” 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays & 2 p.m. Sundays, Cox Auditorium in the Fine Arts Building (J-Building)

Triton College’s Performing Arts Department will kick off their theater season with “Fuddy Meers” by David Lindsay-Abaire. “Fuddy Meers” tells the story of an amnesiac, Claire, who awakens each morning as a blank slate on which her husband and teenage son must imprint the facts of her life. One morning, Claire is abducted by a limping, lisping man who claims her husband wants to kill her. The audience views the ensuing mayhem through the kaleidoscope of Clarie’s world. The play culminates in a cacophony of revelations, proving that everything is not what it appears to be. “Fuddy Meers” is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York. Admission is $12 for general audience members and $10 for students, faculty/staff and seniors. Hypertension Screening Program, 3 to 6 p.m., Student Center Cafeteria

Triton College’s Health Services Department, in conjunction with the Associate Degree of Nursing Students, will conduct a Hypertension Screening Program that will include information on what is a healthy blood pressure rate and ways to regulate one’s blood pressure. Participants can get their blood pressure checked. Those at risk of hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, will receive follow-up care by Triton’s Health Services, as well as recommendations to maintain healthy blood pressure. The program features the Triton College Community Band in its annual winter program. The 40-member group performs a wide variety of pieces that represent the principal periods that make up the history of the modern concert band. This includes overtures, marches, colorful program pieces, and instrumental features together with current pop styles. A portion of the program will be devoted to familiar holiday selections. From Oct. 4-27, the Cernan Earth and Space Center brings an array of new and favorite shows to inform and entertain families on astronomy at the planetarium. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. (except Oct. 12 for the Monthly Skywatch) and 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sundays. Tour the nighttime sky during Cernan Earth and Space Center’s Monthly Skywatch program. The evening includes a presentation on the latest news from NASA in the space center’s dome theater and outdoor skygazing with telescopes focused on the waxing gibbous moon and perhaps an assortment of star clusters and double stars. Admission for the indoor planetarium portion of the Monthly Skywatch is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 2 to 12 and senior citizens ages 55 and older. The outdoor telescope session is free.
