Triton College and Cantata Adult Life Services explore culture through cuisine with new courses

River Grove, Ill. – “Tell me what you eat, and I’ll tell you who you are,” wrote Frenchman Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin. Food can tell us many things about a person’s culture, including the landscape of which they’re from, their religion, or even the context of the kind of event they’re attending, whether it be a marriage or funeral.

Starting summer 2013, individuals can learn how various cuisines relate to different cultures and unique heritages with a new series of courses available through Triton College’s School of Continuing Education.

Through a partnership with Cantata Adult Life Services in Brookfield, the following classes will be available starting the summer 2013 semester:

Mexican Cuisine

Mexican cuisine is known for its blending of indigenous and Spanish influences, and also for its use of local agriculture. Mexican staples include corn, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate, eggplants, avocados and many varieties of squash, vanilla and chilles. In this class, you’ll learn about traditional Mexican dishes, including tamales, bunueolos, mole and other delicious fare.
