New fall 2013 programs at Triton College offer varied options for successful careers

River Grove, Ill. – Practical career readiness is a primary focus of Triton College’s academic planning and program development each year. Based on forecasts of future demand and research into students’ interests, several new degree and certificate programs will be introduced in the fall 2013 semester. Triton strives to provide its students with a diverse and affordable academic program to engage and set them on the path of completing their educational goals.

NEW COURSES

School of Continuing Education’s Cultural Heritage Series

From art to cuisine, and now to traditions, Triton College’s School of Continuing Education will offer a third installment to its popular Cultural Heritage Series, meant to explore and celebrate various cultures. By way of a partnership with Cantata Adult Life Services in Brookfield, the traditions of three different cultures will be highlighted in classes to start fall 2013.

The classes include:

Mexican traditions and holidays tell stories about important historical events as well as celebrate long-held religious beliefs. Explore the most important festivals and celebrations in Mexican culture, including Cinco de Mayo, El Grito de Independencia (Mexican Independence Day), Los Dios de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and Las Posadas (The Shelter).

In every Italian tradition, there is a sense of romance and an appreciation of life that is both inspiring and contagious. Explore different celebrations that take place throughout the year, including Capodanno (New Year’s Day), Festa della Liberazione (Liberation Day), Ognissanti (All Saints’ Day), Pasquetta (Easter Monday) and some of the feast days of Santo Patronos (Patron Saints).

Polish traditions and holidays reflect this culture’s hardworking but light-hearted spirit. Explore Polish national holidays, including Konstytucja Trzeciego Maja (Constitution Day), Dzien Wojska Polskiego (Armed Forces Day), Swieto Niepodleglosci (Independence Day), Smingus Dyngus Day (Easter Monday) and Mikolajki – when Santa Claus gives presents to children.

NEW CERTIFICATES

Social Media

The School of Continuing Education is offering a Social Media Certificate designed to provide instruction to utilize the growing opportunities available through social media marketing. Entrepreneurs, business owners, promoters and organizations can especially benefit from the program as a variety of social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Foursquare, will be introduced as a modern method of marketing one’s services and products.

Professional Bilingual Office Assistant

Nuevos Horizontes, Triton College’s community center in Melrose Park, will offer a fast-track, intensive program for students to become certified as a professional bilingual office assistant in six months. The four-day-a-week program asks for prospective students to be bilingual in English and Spanish, have basic computer skills and be able to type at least 20 words per minute. The program is designed for students who have a basic knowledge of computers and typing and are interested in working in an office environment to get them into a career quicker.

Sustainable Agroecology

The certificate will provide students with the practical skills to use sustainable practices to positively influence the quality of natural ecosystems and the human environment.

Sustainable Food Production

The certificate is designed for learners who wish to focus on how to produce nutritional food crops and look at governmental policies and regulations which control production of nutritious food products.

NEW DEGREES

Mechatronics

Mechatronics is a growing and fascinating sector of advanced manufacturing that is a part of many everyday items, including computer hard drives, washing machines, coffee makers and medical devices. Combining “mechanics” and “electronics,” the term is used to describe electronics that control mechanical systems, such as an electronically programmed car key that when a button is pressed, a signal will automatically open a door. The program will be offered as an associate’s degree and certificate in the fall.

The program derives from a U.S. Department of Labor grant meant to answer the call of a 600,000 employee shortage nationwide in the field of advanced manufacturing.

Sustainable Agriculture Technology

Triton’s Sustainable Agriculture Technology degree will be the first for Illinois community colleges and is made possible through a grant from the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The degree will prepare students to manage an environmentally sound and sustainable urban food production system.

Sustainable Landscape Practices

The Sustainable Landscape Practices degree complements Triton’s sustainable landscape certificate program that will teach on sustainable landscape features and practices, including soil and water conservation, use of fertilizers and pesticides, as well as the infrastructure enhancements of green roofs and xeriscaping. Upon completing the program, graduates can go on to work as a landscaping, horticulture or entomology technician.

University Center

Triton College’s University Center will offer two new bachelor’s degree options in fall 2013. National Louis University added a bachelor’s degree in Special Education, and Dominican University recently partnered with Triton to bring Triton’s students and anyone in the community with an associate’s degree the option of pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies, without leaving Triton’s campus. Triton’s University Center partners include Dominican, National Louis, Benedictine University, Governors State University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Eastern Illinois University.
