Special Events

36th Annual Eddie Biondo Fall Fest Parade
Sunday, October 6 • 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Where: Scott Street and Grand Avenue

Come out and join us as we celebrate the 36th annual Eddie Biondo Fall Fest Parade. Gather your friends, family and neighbors to see the marching bands, clowns, local businesses, civic organizations, families and friends showcase themselves in our parade. The line-up will begin at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Scott Street, head east on Grand and then north on 25th   Avenue (Rose   Street). The parade ends at Addison and 25th Avenue. Don’t forget, following the parade we will have our annual Pumpkin Fest at North Park, 10040 Addison. If you are interested in participating in the parade, please contact Phyllis Schmidt at 847-451-8135. See you there!

Pumpkin Fest
Sunday, October 6 • 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Where: North Park, 10040 Addison

The fun does not stop after the Eddie Biondo Fall Fest Parade. Continue celebrating at North Park with Pumpkin Fest! Here you will find loads and loads of bright orange pumpkins just waiting to be taken home and be painted! The afternoon is filled with family fun, including music, prizes, games and great food! Watch for more information in your local paper, or call the Park District at 847-455-2852

Halloween Hoot

Thursday, October 31 • 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Location: North Park, 10040 Addison Street

Come dressed in your Halloween best! This evening will be full of trickish games and crafts, but don’t be scared. Join us in walking in our annual costume parade and participate in our costume awards. Winners will be selected for scariest, cutest, and most unique costumes, and prizes will be awarded. Hotdogs and refreshments will be provided for the little monsters!

Educational Programming

After School Program

Monday-Friday, Present-End of May • 3:00 -6:00 p.m.

Location: Community Center, 9560 Franklin   Ave.

Are you looking for an affordable, fun and reliable place for your child to go after school? If so, the Park District has what you are looking for. Our After-School program allows children to get exercise in our gym through fun games and activities, have a small snack, and get help with their homework if needed. Our goal is to make your night easier by finishing homework and wearing the kids out with play and social interaction.

Grades 1-8, Daily fee $9 and $3 for transportation, $12 for non-District 84 schools

 

2012-2013 Tot School

Monday, Wednesday and Friday and/or Tuesday, and Thursday, September 5– December 7 • 9:15 p.m. – 10:45 a.m.

Location: Community Center, 9560 Franklin   Ave.

Is your child too young for Preschool? Look no further! This early childhood education class is a great way to introduce your child to school. This innovative program offers a range of opportunities to help each child develop to their full potential. We follow a yearly curriculum, and students have the chance to explore different learning centers, such as dramatic play, books, music, blocks and puzzles. Snack time and gym time are also included daily. Open registration, so students may register at any time.

2012-2013 Kindergarten Enrichment

Monday – Friday, August 15–- December 17 • 12:30 p.m. –- 3:30 p.m.

Location: Sunflower Nature Center at North Park, 10040 Addison Avenue

Our new Kindergarten Enrichment program provides a quality enrichment experience for kindergarten-age children attending half-day kindergarten programs. This unique and multifaceted program is designed to spark children’s interest in a variety of activities, including art, music, theater, movement, science and child-led play. The program follows the District 84 school-year calendar. Working parents who desire extended hours for their child can enroll in the Early Start Program beginning at 11:30 am and ending at 12:30 pm. Children in the Early Start program must bring a lunch and beverage. Open registration, so students may register at any time. Call Phyllis Schmidt at 847-451-8135 with any questions.

Youth Athletics

Kid’s Karate Club

Wednesday, September 25-November 20 (Session I, Beginners) • 6-6:45 pm

Wednesday, September 25- November 20 (Session I, Yellow Belt & Above) • 6:45-7:30 p.m.

Location: North School Gym, 9500 Gage St.

Want to be the next Karate Kid? You can, with the Kid’s Karate Club Program. This progressive martial arts program teaches the basics in karate, self defense, sparring and safety. This high energy program is specifically designed for children ages 4 through 14. Parents may participate with their children at no additional cost as part of our Parent Helper Program. Family involvement and respect are key elements, and children are encouraged and motivated to do their best in all aspects of their lives. Karate uniforms ($35) are required and are available from the instructor. There are many karate programs, but only one Kid’s Karate Club. Youth Programs

Magic Class
Tuesday, October 15 • 6:45 – 7:45 p.m.

Where: Community Center, 9560   Franklin Ave.

Children are guaranteed a great time as they learn fascinating tricks from the Magic Team of Gary Kantor! Amaze your family and friends with tricks involving cards, ropes, coins, mind reading and more. While tricks may appear difficult, you’ll discover they are quick to learn and easy to perform. All materials are provided and each child receives a magic kit to take home. Children are grouped by age and learn age appropriate tricks. You can sign up for this class again and again — new tricks are taught each session! Pre-registration is required.

Ages 5-12 years, $18/$22

 

Walk Live Program

Tuesday, October 22- November 26 • 7-8 p.m.

Location: Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison

Get up and get moving with our Youth Walking Club. Each class makes your child excited to get off the couch and moving. Our certified instructor helps get your child more enthusiastic about getting active. This program is an aerobics group fitness class that is a multi-muscle workout and low impact, but high intensity. Fitness walking is proven to reduce illness and create a better quality of life. Enhance your child’s health and wellness today!

Ages 10-14 years, $35/$40

 

Stars of Tomorrow Acting Class

Tuesdays and Thursday, November 5 – December 19 (Session II) • 6-7:30 p.m.

Where: North School, 9560 Gage Street

This theater class is designed to teach children and teens the basics of theatrical performance as well as scenic design. Students learn improvisation, pantomime, prop work, how to create a character, and how to collectively put on a show. The work culminates with a performance for families to showcase what the students created. The skills learned in this class are designed to introduce children to the creative art of theater and enhance their development. Please note: Performances will be held the last day of class.

Teen Programs

Teen Night
Friday, October 25 • 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Location: Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison

Are you sick of doing the same boring thing every Friday Night? If so, come to Teen Night. Listen to music, hang out with your friends and play some games. With different locations for Teen Night, you have the opportunity to play basketball, volleyball, dodgeball and table tennis. Don’t sit home on the computer. Come out and hang out face-to-face with your friends. Teen passes required for all participants. Teen passes are free initially but are $6 for replacements. Participants need to show a current school report card/schedule and fill out our teen pass form.

GRADES 6-8, $5 at the door

Adult Athletics

Men’s Basketball League

Monday, January 22-April 16 • 7, 8 & 9 p.m.

Where: Community Center, 9560   Franklin Ave.

Don’t let the winter keep you inactive; join our Men’s Basketball League. With a 10-game regular season and single elimination tournament, we keep you fi t until the weather breaks. Teams must have uniforms (Park District will provide at cost for teams who do not) and play at least once a week. For more information contact Dan at 847-455-2852. Aquatic Programs

Family Swim Night

Friday, September 20-December 6 • 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Location: Mannheim Middle School, 2600 Hyde Park, Melrose Park

Get the family together and enjoy an evening close to home. The warm water will warm you up inside as fall comes and the weather turns cooler. Mannheim pool is a beautiful indoor heated pool that families can enjoy on Friday nights. Children under the age of twelve must be accompanied by an adult.

Please note: All participants must wear a swim cap. Caps will be available for purchase at the pool. Swim floats and/or water wings are not allowed.

All Ages (children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult), Fee: Individual: $20 R/$25 NR

 

Youth Swim Lessons

Tuesday & Thursday, October 29-November 21 (Class A Session II) • 6:30-7:15 p.m.

Tuesday & Thursday, October 29-November 21  (Class B Session II) • 7:30-8:15 p.m.

Location: Mannheim Middle School, 2600 Hyde Park, Melrose Park

Join our fun and safe swimming classes instructed by our water safety instructors. These classes will help your child learn to be safe when they are in, on or around water–while having fun! We will emphasize swim strokes/techniques, a variety of safety skills, and emergency readiness. Your children will learn skills that are important for their safety, which will stay with them forever.

Ages 5-12 years, Fee: $45 R/$52 NR

 

Adult Aquacize

Monday & Wednesday, September 16-November 18 • 6:30-7:15 p.m.

Location: Mannheim Middle School, 2600 Hyde Park, Melrose Park

Have fun while enjoying great and effective programs for rehabilitation, arthritis sufferers, pregnant women and seniors. These exercises will give you the gentle resistance needed to keep muscles toned and strong, without added stress to joints. Various water tools will be used. Aquatic shoes are recommended for comfort. Please consult your physician before starting any new exercise program.

Ages 18 years and older, Fee: $42 R/$52 NR

 

Adult Open Swim

Monday & Wednesday, September 16-November 18 • 7:15-8 p.m.

Location: Mannheim Middle School, 2600 Hyde Park, Melrose Park

Enjoy the opportunity to stay fit and enjoy a summer activity during those cold, winter months! Kickboards and pull buoys are available for your training use. A swim cap must be worn by all participants and will be available for purchase at the pool. Please consult your physician before starting any new exercise program.

Adult Programs and Trips

Knitting, Crocheting & Needlepoint Club

First and third Tuesday of each month • 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Location: Community Center, 9560 Franklin Ave.

This free program is designed for anyone who would like to learn how to knit, needlepoint, crochet or simply get together with others to complete their projects. Two members have volunteered to bring extra supplies and give tips and instructions to those who may need them.

Dog Obedience

Beginners: Friday, October 11-November 15 • 7-8:30 p.m.

Advanced: Friday, October 11-November 15 • 8:30-10 p.m.

Location: Community Center, 9560 Franklin Ave.

With a positive approach to training, our experienced instructor helps you and your family members enhance the relationship with the canine in your home. Dogs should be at least three months old with proof of shots. Bring proof of shots to the first class. Beginners: Do not bring dog to first class. Owners: 12 years and up. Dogs: 3 months and up. Please Note: Beginners, please do not bring your dogs to the first class. Please note the first class is only one hour long.

Hello Dolly!
Thursday, October 24 • 10:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Location: Oakbrook Terrace, IL

Hello Dolly! Has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits, enjoying three Broadway revivals and international success as well as being made into the film that was nominated for seven Academy Awards. Join us for lunch and this spectacular performance! Fee includes lunch, theatre ticket and transportation.

Adult Fitness Programs

Step/Floor

Tuesday, October 15-December 17 • 6-7 p.m.

Location: Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison

Get moving with this low impact, easy to follow, step aerobic class. Motivating music and various routines are combined differently each week. This guarantees an effective and fun workout. A short toning segment completes the class. Please bring an exercise mat and energy!

Ages 15 and up, $40/$45

 

Gentle Yoga

Tuesdays and Thursdays, October 29-December 19 •10 -11:15 a.m.

Location: Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison

Gentle yoga is for those who never practiced yoga and for those preferring a less vigorous, less physically demanding style. Each class begins with a slow warm-up, yoga stretches and ends with relaxation.

Zumba

Monday, October 28-December 16 • 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, October 30-December 18 • 6-7 p.m.

Location: Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison

Zumba uses captivating Latin rhythms and simple dance moves and creates a fun, fast-paced fitness program. This class features routines with interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat.

Total Body Fitness

Monday, October 28-December 16 • 9-10 a.m.

Wednesday, October 30-December 18 • 9-10 a.m.

Looking for variety in your workout? Each week we learn a different routine starting with a warm-up followed by hi-low aerobics, step or interval training. We also concentrate on muscle toning and strengthening using free weights. Class ends with a relaxing stretch. A wide selection of music is used to keep the workouts fun and exciting, including rock, pop, Latin and dance! *Please bring an exercise mat, weights and water bottle.

Ages 15 and Up, $32/$36, Friday’s session is $28/$32

 

R.I.P.P.E.D.

Thursday, October 17-Dec 19 • 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Location: Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison

This total body workout for men and women utilizes resistance and cardio training while it masterfully combines resistance, intervals, power, plyometrics, endurance and diet.

Ages 15 and up, $39/$46

 

Walk Live Program

Wednesday, October 30-December 19 • 7-8 p.m.

Location: Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison

Energize your day and super-charge your metabolism with this walking program! By walking, you improve your health, feel energetic and tone muscles. Fitness Walking creates results in addition to other healthy lifestyle choices by reducing disease and improving the quality of life!

Ages 15 and up, $44/$52

 

The Park District offers various fitness classes including Adult Aquacize, R.I.P.P.E.D., Yoga, Total Body Fitness, Step, Zumba, Zumba Toning with Mat Pilates, Adult Hip-Hop Cardio and Table Tennis.  

 

FitnessCenter

Now offering junior memberships for ages 1117!!!

Have your parent register you for The Fitness Center at the Park District of Franklin Park; 9560 Franklin Avenue The fitness center includes two separate rooms and 17 state-of-the-art Life Fitness machines. A FitnessCenter pass may be obtained at the Community Center, with various membership plans to choose from. A yearly pass is less than $10 per month, payment plans are available.  Fitness Center hours are 6 am-9 pm Monday-Friday, 9 am-6 pm on Saturdays and 9 am-7:30 pm on Sundays.
