FRANKLIN PARK

KIDNAPPING – At approximately 3:34 a.m. Sunday August 5, 2012 a 26 year old female was walking home in the area of Fullerton and Lincoln when a vehicle pulled up alongside her and questioned if she needed help. The vehicle was driven by the suspect Jesus M Cano, 37 years old, who resides in the 800 block of Roberta Melrose Park, Illinois. Suspect Cano exited his vehicle grabbed the female dragging her into the backseat of his vehicle, telling her if she remains quiet he won’t kill her. Suspect Cano placed one hand over the female victim’s mouth and began fumbling with the waistline on his pants. During this time two witnesses heard the victim’s cries for help and intervened. The suspect Cano then fled the area on foot leaving his vehicle at the scene. Franklin Park Police arrived on scene were able to identify the suspect. On Monday August 6, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. the suspect Cano was taken into custody by Franklin Park Detectives and charged with kidnapping, a class 2 felony. Cano was transported to Cook County Maybrook Court House for a bond hearing. 

THEFT

  •  Aug. 11. A purse was reported stolen from a vehicle 300 block of Atlantic St.The purse contained $20, prescription, ID, Social Security card, Droid cellular phone and gold bracelet.

VANDALISM

  • Aug 9, on the  9100 block of Grand Avenue a 2011 Chevrolet Cavalier passenger side window was reported smashed.

BURGLARY

  • Aug 9, on the 10500 block of Crown Road an Electric and hand tools were reported stolen from a vehicle.The rear door lock was smashed open.
  • Aug 13, Approximately $30,000 was stolen from a vehicle on the 9000 block of Belmont Avenue at 12:22 pm. 

SCHILLER PARK

Two people were hospitalized and taken to area hospitals on August 17th in an early morning accident involving a U.S. Postal Service semi-trailer truck and a van. The accident happened at 4:50 am on Mannheim Road just south of Irving Park Road. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

BURGLARY – A thief gained entrance to a home on the 4500 block of Scott Street by apparently using a patio chair to climb into the master bedroom window.

The home was ransacked, mostly in the bedroom, and almost fifty thousand dollars’ worth of property was stolen. Police became aware of the robbery when the thief set off the motion sensor to the home’s alarm system when he entered the basement. The owner of the home mentioned a possible suspect in the case and is willing to sign a complaint if an offender is found. The case is under investigation. 

August 23 –  Police apprehended a suspect that fled on foot from a traffic stop in Franklin Park. Franklin Park cars 118 & 104 were in a foot chase with a subject, a male white in a yellow shirt running on Irving heading towards Wesley. He was taken into custody near the viaduct on the North side of Irving.

BURGLARY – St. Beatrice church had two of their money collection boxes forcibly opened and the contents stolen on July 27 or 28th by an unknown thief.  There was no sign of forced entry, but a side door was observed unlocked when it should have been secured. Damage and money stolen amounted to approximately $150. 

Vehicle Theft – Officers were called to the Hampton Inn on Mannheim Road for a report of a vehicle theft. A guest reported all his camera equipment stolen from his car. Although the owner of the vehicle remembered locking his doors, there was no sign of forced entry. Property was estimated at over ten thousand dollars.

Vehicle Theft – After failing to lock his vehicle while parked behind his home, a resident of the 4900 block of Harold reported having some money stolen from his van on August 5 or 6 in the early morning hours. A penny collection and miscellaneous change amounted to approximately $55.    

Elmwood Park

THEFT:

  • Aug. 19 on the 2400 block of Harlem Avenue  retail theft.Victim allegedly tried to leave Caputo’s Fresh Market with $34.75 worth of merchandise without paying.
  • Aug. 6 at Panera Bread, 7330 North Ave a  wallet was taken from a purse.
  • Aug. 7 on 7900 block of Grand Avenue,A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a black Kia Sportage.
  • Aug. 6 on 2200 block,block of 74th Court.,Two bass drum pedals were reported missing from a house.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE:

  • Aug. 5 and Aug. 6  on the 2400 block of Harlem Avenue graffiti was painted on a white Caputo’s grocery store van in the grocery store’s parking lot.

BATTERY:

  •  Aug. 17 on the 8200 block of Grand Avenue, Victim was arrested and charged with battery and two counts of obstruction.
  • Aug. 7 on the 2500 block of 72nd Court,a woman was struck in the face with a shoe.

RIVER GROVE:

BURGLARY:

  • Aug. 10 on the 2500 block of Davisson Street. Sometime between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m a home was reported burglarized.Unknown persons entered through the basement window and took a computer, a Toshiba laptop and $200 from the basement of the home.

DRUGS – Elmwood Park Police in cooperation with the Chicago Police Department apprehended a man who police say is a Chicago gang member. A search warrant was issued at 2701 73rd Avenue and police recovered 60 pounds of compressed marijuana. Jose Herrera, 32, was arrested on possession charges. Elmwood Park Police Chief Frank Fagiano said Herrera is not believed to be an Elmwood Park resident, but was a frequent guest of the apartment tenant. “We have spoken with the son of the building owner to ensure compliance with the Village’s Crime Free Housing Ordinance,” Fagiano said. Chicago Police said Herrera is a member of a Chicago street gang and sold drugs only within the City of Chicago. “He did not deal drugs in Elmwood Park,” Fagiano said. Officers also recovered an unspecified amount of cash, but no weapons were found inside of the home. Herrera was taken into custody without incident and transported to Chicago. Police are continuing their investigation, but no further arrests are expected.

NORTHLAKE

August 15 – An armed robbery occurred on the first block of West North Avenue when Jose Duran of Northlake allegedly pulled a knife on a woman and stole a gold chain and charm from her. She fractured her finger during the assault. 

Theft

August 16 – Items valued at $110 were taken from a Walmart store by a Walmart employee. Elsa Quevedo of Elmwood Park was charged with retail theft. Her court date was August 21.

 August 13 – $3,500 worth of jewelry was allegedly stolen by Zarya Rodriguez of Caldwell, Idaho from the 400 block of East North Avenue.

August 10 – A 16 year old boy from Northlake made his way to the Northlake Fire Station after being beaten on the 200 block of Fullerton Avenue. The boy suffered a fractured skull and had 14 staples put in his head. The incident was described by police as gang-motivated and they arrested four people within an hour of the attack. Two of those were charged with aggravated battery and bond was set at $10,000 each. 

ROBBERY – August 7 – A man described as a 50 year old Hispanic approx. 5’6” with a medium to heavy build, salt and pepper hair, and a goatee wearing an Oakland Athletics cap robbed the US Bank Branch at 26 W. North Avenue. He did not show a gun but implied he had one and demanded money. He drove away with an undisclosed amount of money in a newer-model black Chevrolet pickup with an extended cab with hydraulics for a snow plow attached to the front. PARK RIDGE

August 21,At Ridge’s Woodland Park  two teen boys were charged with disorderly conduct after they were accused of knocking over portable toilets and garbage cans.

Residents are warned to keep their valuables locked up, doors and windows locked when not at home, vehicles locked, even if leaving it for a few minutes; that’s all it takes for a thief to take off with it. Call police if you observe any suspicious activity in your area. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt. Only a court of law can make that determination.
