 THE CRUCIBLE DEBUTS AT LEYDEN

District 212’s production of The Crucible debuts at 3:00 p.m. on October 4, and at 7:00 p.m. on October 5, 11, and 12, in the auditorium at West Leyden High School, 1000 N. Wolf Rd., Northlake.  Talented student-thespians from both campuses are included in the cast and crew.

Salem, Massachusetts, 1692.  This is the historical setting for Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, an unsettling narrative about the witch hunts that took place over a period of two years and ended in 1694 with the death of 20 people.

The witch hunts were based on the accusations of twelve year-old Anne Putnam who claimed she witnessed several Salem residents holding séances and consorting with the devil.  Clergyman Samuel Parris takes the accusations seriously, and ultimately leads the prosecution of alleged witches living the English colony.

Using the witch hunts as a vehicle, playwright Miller raises several powerful questions about the manner in which human judgment, morality, politics, and religion impact individuals and the world community.  In the end, we see that lessons learned from the witch hunts are relevant to events unfolding in the world today.

Admission is $2 for students and $3 for adults.  For more information, go to www.leyden212.org/finearts.
