Triton College names Schaumburg resident as track and field coach

River Grove, Ill. – The Triton College Athletic Department is proud to announce Nick Schneigert as head coach for men’s and women’s track and field. The 36-year-old Schaumburg resident will take on the task of rebuilding the program from the ground up. Triton has not competed in track and field in 20 years. The re-launch of the program was announced in July.

“I believe we have the right man for the job to breathe air back into our track and field program that has been dormant for over two decades,” said Triton College Athletic Director Harry McGinnis. “Nick is very energetic and eager to tackle the challenges ahead. I look forward to working with him and together developing a quality program that Triton can be proud of.”

“Coming to Triton is just a wonderful opportunity for me to be a head college track and field coach in the Chicagoland area,” Schneigert said. “I know a lot of people were interested in the position, and I appreciate Harry McGinnis in having the confidence in me to lead the program.”

Schneigert brings to Triton several years of coaching experience in the youth, high school and college levels. In September 2011, he received his USATF Level 1 coaching certification at Cheyney University in Pennsylvania. This past spring, he was the assistant jumps coach at Geneva High School where he helped the team to their second IHSA Class 3A sectional title. From 2011-2013, Schneigert was an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Rockford College.

Under the guidance of Schneigert, Triton plans to field a team to compete in time for January 2014. But this year will be unique for Schneigert who has to recruit a team this season within the hallways and buildings of the college. So far, approximately 30 students have expressed interest in joining the team.

“My main focus is not only finding quality athletes but what’s also important is their work ethic, their character and how they are academically,” Schneigert said. “I’ve met a lot of great students enrolled here from all backgrounds, and I’m very excited that we will have a very diverse team next semester.”

Another focus for Schneigert will be recruiting, concentrating on quality high school track programs in the area.  “There are a number of terrific high school programs in the area where we can recruit from,” he said. “I want the high school coaches and athletes to know there are so many opportunities we can provide here. I love to recruit. I love to network, and it’s going to be an exciting year recruiting-wise.”

Any Triton student enrolled full-time who is interested in participating in track and field can contact Coach Schneigert by e-mail at nschneig@triton.edu or call (708) 456-0300, Ext. 3800.
