What’s coming up at Triton College

River Grove, Ill. – The following are events coming up at Triton College. All of the events listed are free and open to the public and will take place on Triton’s River Grove campus, located at 2000 Fifth Ave., unless otherwise stated.

Jan. 21 through Feb. 21, 2014

Annual District High School Art Competition, Triton College Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Building (J-Building)

More than 200 art pieces created by area high school students will fill Triton College’s Art Gallery with youthful energy and creativity. A dazzling array of work in a variety of art media is brought together by the college’s educational partners who work to bring the best of their schools’ creations to compete for prizes each year. A closing reception for the artists and their guests is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12 in the gallery. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Black History Month Kick-Off Celebration, Noon to 1 p.m., B-130 of the Student Center (B-Building)

The Triton College Black History Month Kick-Off Celebration jump starts the college’s monthlong celebration of diversity and recognition of the achievements of African-Americans. The kick-off invites the entire Triton community, as well as community residents, to hear reflections from Triton’s students and staff as well as remarks by Triton College President Dr. Patricia Granados. Dr. Carol Adams, president and CEO of the DuSable Museum of African-American History, is the keynote speaker. The event will also have live music, soul food refreshments and the opportunity for attendees to register to vote. Auditions for Triton College’s Performing Arts Department production of “Crimes of the Heart”, 7 p.m.

Triton College’s Performing Arts Department will hold auditions for Beth Henley’s “Crimes of the Heart” from Feb. 4-6. Auditions will begin at 7 p.m. each day. Those who audition are asked to come prepared with two contrasting monologues (one contemporary and one classical), a photo/headshot and a resume of performance experience. “Crimes of the Heart” plays May 2-4 and 8-11. BHC Health & Wellness Fair, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Student Center Cafeteria (B-Building)

Triton College’s Black Heritage Council will host a health and wellness fair to bring awareness to certain health conditions that plague the African-American community. The fair, in conjunction with the college’s Health Services, will provide health screenings, such as blood pressure checks and physical assessments, as well as activities and demonstrations to encourage healthy living. Organizations and businesses that will be in attendance include the Proviso Township Mental Health Commission, Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois, Walgreens Pharmacy, Chicago Prostate Cancer Center, Loyola Center for Fitness and many more. Free and confidential HIV testing (no ID required) will be offered by Vida/SIDA Clinic of Chicago in observance of the 15th annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, and attendees will also have the opportunity to register to vote. Artist Explosion, 11 a.m. to Noon, Room B-210 of the Student Center (B-Building)

Local artist Bernie Staggers will present an art exhibit on urban design that will include murals and portraits, along with work by Kenneth L. Feb. 11

Black Americans in the Performing Arts, Room B-210 of the Student Center (B-Building)

Triton College’s Black Heritage Council pays tribute to black American performing artists with a live performance by accomplished actor Phillip Edward Van Lear. Van Lear has performed in regional theater productions and has appeared in movies (“Barbershop 2: Back in Business” and “Meet the Browns”). He’s also held recurring roles on such television shows as “Prison Break” and “The Chicago Code.” Following his performance, Van Lear will lead a discussion on black Americans in film since the Civil Rights Act, reflecting on his own experiences as an actor. National African-American Read-In, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Room A-321 of the Triton College Library, located in the A-Building

Read your favorite book or come to read an excerpt of a poem at the 25th National African-American Read-In on Feb. 11. The national day is sponsored by the Black Caucus of National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and endorsed by the National Reading Association to encourage the importance of literacy (www.ncte.org/action/aari). Financial Aid Days, 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Room B-130B of the Student Center Building (B-Building)

Triton College’s Financial Aid Office will hold sessions on how to begin the financial aid process toward one’s education. Topics will include grants, scholarships, work-study programs, veteran educational benefits and loans. Attendees can also receive assistance in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Individuals are asked to bring their 2013 taxes or documentation to support their untaxed income to receive assistance with their FAFSA. Light refreshments will be served. Mi-Yeon Katz Art Exhibit, Triton College Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Building (J-Building)

Triton College faculty member Mi-Yeon Katz will have her most recent ceramic work on display in Triton’s art gallery. The thurst of her art projects emphasize balancing cultural diversity and narrowing gaps between generations. Her professional art practice has focused on public sculptures, non-traditional gallery art shows, as well as collaborative media art. The solo show reflects her interests. Black History Month Art Exhibits, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Room B-130 of the Student Center (B-Building)

Triton College students will curate two exhibits recognizing the achievements of African-Americans past and present. The first exhibit, to be available for viewing on Tuesday, Feb. 18, will look at inventions by African-Americans; and the second exhibit, available Thursday, Feb. 20, will recognize notable blacks from Chicago. Discover Triton: Explore Your Opportunities, 6 p.m., Room B-130A&B of the Student Center (B-Building)

Learn about the various programs available at Triton College with this exploratory series that highlights a new area of study each month. Students can tour classrooms and labs of particular programs and meet faculty, as well as learn about the admission and financial aid process to enroll in Triton classes. On Feb. 19, the School of Business and Technology will be explored, including such programs as architecture, automotive technology, criminal justice administration, hospitality and more. Pack the Place Family Night, 4 to 7 p.m., Robert M. Collins Center Gymnasium

Triton College students and alumni and their families are invited to Pack the Place Family Night on Feb. 19, when the, Triton Trojans take on the Harper Hawks. The event will have pre-game refreshments and activities, half-time entertainment and athlete induction into the Triton College Hall of Fame. Stepper’s Set, 7 p.m. to midnight, Student Center Cafeteria (B-Building)

Triton College’s Black Heritage Council will host its Eighth Annual Stepper’s Set to raise funds to support cultural programming and student scholarships at Triton. Triton College’s Performing Arts Department presents “Hungry Ghosts”, 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, Cox Auditorium (Room J-108), Fine Arts Building (J-Building)

Triton College’s Performing Arts Department will perform “Hungry Ghosts” by M.E.H. Lewis on March 1 and 2 in Triton’s Cox Auditorium. “Hungry Ghosts” follows Alice, a forensic anthropologist, on a mission to recover the remains of fallen American soldiers in Vietnam. Adopted by an American couple after Operation Baby Life during the war, she also searches for answers about her own identity. In a small rural village in Quang Tri Province, she uncovers the ghosts of a wounded nation and her own past.

One Earth Film Fest, 2 p.m., Performing Arts Center of the Robert M. Collins Center

Triton College is hosting a screening for the One Earth Film Fest. The film, titled “Jens Jensen: The Living Green,” is a one-hour documentary about the famed park designer and environmentalist who designed the Garfield Park Conservatory and Columbus Park. This will be the Chicago-area premier and filmmaker Carey Lundin will be on hand to discuss the film, along with Triton College Mass Communications instructor Seth McClellan. Annual Artist Showcase Concert, 7:30 p.m., Performing Arts Center of the Robert M. Collins Center

Distinguished members of Triton College’s Artist Faculty are featured on this concert that will present them performing concerto literature, accompanied by a full orchestra. The concert will include Dr. Akiko Konishi on piano and Talia Pavia on violin, returning from a successful concert last year. Monthly Skywatch, 7:30 p.m., Cernan Earth and Space Center, Triton College

Tour the nighttime sky during Cernan Earth and Space Center’s Monthly Skywatch program. The evening includes a presentation on the latest news from NASA in the space center’s dome theater and outdoor skygazing with telescopes focused on the planet Jupiter and waxing gibbous moon as well as perhaps an assortment of star clusters and double stars. Admission for the indoor planetarium portion of the Monthly Skywatch is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 2 to 12 and senior citizens ages 55 and older. The outdoor telescope session is free.
