What’s coming up at Triton College

River Grove, Ill. – The following are events coming up at Triton College. All of the events listed are free and open to the public and will take place on Triton’s River Grove campus, located at 2000 Fifth Ave., unless otherwise stated.

“My Home is My Brain”: Paintings and Drawings by Gabriel Villa, Triton College Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Building (J-Building)

“My Home is My Brain” mines social and personal terrains to include memories of artist Gabriel Villa’s family, neighbors and childhood home, as well as reflections on the cultural moment in which he lives. Many of his drawings and paintings function like “momento mori,” meditating on our relationship with time and our slow progression toward obscurity. This meditation is also present in the choice of his human subjects. A reception for the artist is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 1 in the gallery. Triton College Jazz Spectacular, 7:30 p.m., Performing Arts Center (Room R-218) of Robert M. Collins Building

Building on the success of 2012’s Jazz Spectacular (featuring clinics and performances by the celebrated New Tricks Jazz Quartet), 2013’s event promises to be an evening of world-class jazz music performed by top-tier guest artists, Triton jazz faculty and Triton jazz students as well as local high school students. Community members and students can take part in the clean-up of Adena Woods, a recently adopted portion of the Cook County Forest Preserve by Triton College. The clean-up crew will also work on controlling invasive species, such as garlic mustard and buckthorn. Discover Triton: Explore Your Opportunities, 6 p.m., Room B-130A&B of the Student Center (B-Building)

Learn about the various programs available at Triton College with this exploratory series that highlights a new area of study each month. Students can tour classrooms and labs of particular programs and meet faculty, as well as learn about the admission and financial aid process to enroll in Triton classes. On April 17, Triton’s School of Arts and Sciences will be explored, including such programs as early childhood education, psychology, sociology, biology, chemistry and social work, as well as Triton’s University Transfer Programs. Annual Spring Student Exhibit, Triton College Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Building (J-Building)

Come to this annual celebration of Triton College students’ creativity during the Annual Spring Student Exhibit, starting April 24. Works in all media created by students will be on display, including recent additions of live demonstrations of web design and screenings of student-produced short films. A Step for Vets walk and donation drive, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Around the mounds on the west side of Triton’s campus

Join Triton College in taking the first step toward ending veteran hunger and homelessness in the area communities by participating in a walk and donation drive to raise awareness and help veterans in need. The event kicks off at 10 a.m., with live entertainment, children’s activities, refreshments and community resources available in support of helping our veterans. Food will also be available for purchase, with proceeds benefitting Hines VA Hospital. Donations of non-perishable food items, gently used or new clothing and personal hygiene items will be collected to donate to Hines VA Hospital. Registration is free. Job Fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Student Center Cafeteria, located in the B-Building

The Triton College Career Services Center will be hosting employers recruiting for full-time, part-time and seasonal employment at their annual Job Fair on April 30. Admission is free and open to the public, but professional attire and a resume is required for entry. If you do not have a resume, contact the Career Services Center prior to the event to set up an appointment to create one. Sign language interpretation services are also available by calling in advance. Children are not permitted at the job fair. Prospective students and their families can have all their questions answered about Triton College at its Open House on Saturday, May 4. Students and their families will have the opportunity to meet Triton faculty, staff and students, talk with admission representatives, receive information about financial aid and scholarships, learn about Triton’s programs and tour the campus and experience “The Triton Difference.” Attendees can also participate in a raffle to win a free three-credit hour course. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, Performing Arts Center (Room R-218) of the Robert M. Collins Building

The Triton College Performing Arts Department closes out its 2012-2013 production season with William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” One of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” mixes magic, love spells and a mysterious forest for a marvelous mix-up of desire and enchantment, merriment and farce that explores the relationship between art and life, dreams and the waking world, as well as the light and dark sides of love. From April 5-28, the Cernan Earth and Space Center brings an array of new and favorite shows to inform and entertain families on astronomy at the planetarium. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. (except April 20 for the Monthly Skywatch) and 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sundays. Monthly Skywatch, 7:30 p.m., Cernan Earth and Space Center, Triton College

Tour the nighttime sky during Cernan Earth and Space Center’s Monthly Skywatch program. The evening includes a presentation on the latest news from NASA in the space center’s dome theater and outdoor skygazing with telescopes focused on planet Jupiter and nearly full moon. Admission for the indoor planetarium portion of the Monthly Skywatch is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 2 to 12 and senior citizens ages 55 and older. The outdoor telescope session is free.
