LIHEAP Assistance Program

For many Illinois households, energy costs place a severe and continuing stress on a senior’s budget.  The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is designed to help eligible low income households pay for winter energy service.  Elizabeth Szilagyi from West Suburban Senior Services will be available to help individuals determine their eligibility for LIHEAP and to complete applications.

Find out more about choices in childbirth. The homelike setting of the Alternative Birthing Center is designed to support women during water birth and other non-interventive births. This class is a requirement for using the Alternative Birthing Center.  FREE.

This series teaches the stages of labor, slow breathing techniques, comfort measures, positions for coping with labor and developing confidence in your body’s ability to birth. Sessions include a a two-day condensed weekend series and a five-week Monday series. Fee: $80 per series.

Learning Café: A Review of Osteoarthritis with Dr. Brent Cutro

Osteoarthritis is erosion or thinning of the cartilage in the body’s joints. Without cartilage, bone surfaces become exposed and damaged. This leads to discomfort and pain, and often a decreased mobility that affects millions of Americans’ lives, especially in their later years. We will review some of the causes, diagnosis methods, and treatment options to help you keep moving!

Benefit Access Applications (formerly Circuit Breaker)

Have you just turned 65 or are you a person with disabilities and income less than $27,610?  If so, you may be eligible to receive transportation assistance.  Eligible applicants receive a “Ride Free” transit card and a $75 license plate discount.   Jazmin Lopez from Solutions for Care can assist you in completing the Benefit Access (formerly Circuit Breaker) application form.  Those who need to re-apply to keep their current transit benefits can also receive assistance.

The Five Wishes (Spanish Session)

A favorite song.  Special poems.  Special people.  Dignity. Respect.  All of these things are important to you, but how do you tell your family about the place you want them to play in your care?  Join Staff from Season’s Hospice and Palliative Care to learn about the benefits of advance care planning by creating Advance Directives. Christmas Concert

Westlake Hospital Prenatal Classes (Spanish)

Westlake Hospital’s 4-week prenatal program is led by a childbirth educator and prepares expectant parents for childbirth. The program is designed to explain the process of labor and delivery, give advice on pain management and answer questions about what to expect during labor. It also includes breathing and relaxation exercises, post-partum care information, infant child safety tips and a tour of The Family Birthplace. Classes are offered in English and Spanish. There is no class fee.

FREE 3-Point Diabetes Screenings

Did you know you can prevent or delay Type 2 Diabetes through early screening? Because there are few symptoms in the early stages of development, diabetes can go undiagnosed for up to 10 years, while rising blood glucose levels begin to cause damage to the body. The Center for Diabetes & Nutrition Education at West Suburban Medical Center offers free 3-point screenings every month, including blood pressure, fasting blood-glucose and Body Mass Index (BMI).
