What’s coming up at Triton College

River Grove, Ill. – The following are events coming up at Triton College. All of the events listed are free and open to the public and will take place on Triton’s River Grove campus, located at 2000 Fifth Ave., unless otherwise stated.

Nov. 6

Discover Triton: Explore Your Opportunities, 6 p.m., Room B-130A&B of the Student Center (B-Building)

Students who’d like to learn more about Triton’s many programs should attend Discover Triton: Explore Your Opportunities, a program that will highlight a different Triton area of study each month. Students can hear from faculty and tour the classrooms and labs for that respective program, as well as receive information on admission and financial aid. From 6 to 7:30 p.m., the School of Health Careers will be explored. Reservations are strongly recommended. Engineering Workshop for Girls, noon to 4 p.m., in the Industrial Careers Building (T-Building)

The Society of Women Engineers – Chicago Regional Section (SWE-CRS) Outreach Committee is hosting an engineering workshop for girls in grades 4 through 8 at Triton College. The afternoon will consist of two hands-on engineering activities, robotics and other activities to encourage girls to learn about the field of engineering. The cost is $5 per participant and free for accompanying adults. To participate, register at www.swe.org/chicago. President’s Reception, 6 p.m., Student Center Cafeteria

The Triton College Foundation is holding their annual President’s Reception on Nov. 13, in the Student Center Cafeteria, where Oak Park-River Forest Board Member Mary Jo Schuler will be honored for her commitment and contributions to the Foundation which serves Triton’s students, alumni and area communities. The reception begins at 6 p.m. and will feature the culinary talents of Triton’s Hospitality students and local restaurants. Tickets are $60 per person and $440 for a table of eight. Sponsorship opportunities and ad book reservations are available. Dress is business casual and there will be a silent auction. “Fuddy Meers,” 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays & 2 p.m. Sundays, Cox Auditorium in the Fine Arts Building (J-Building)

Triton College’s Performing Arts Department will kick off their theater season with “Fuddy Meers” by David Lindsay-Abaire. “Fuddy Meers” tells the story of an amnesiac, Claire, who awakens each morning as a blank slate on which her husband and teenage son must imprint the facts of her life. One morning, Claire is abducted by a limping, lisping man who claims her husband wants to kill her. The audience views the ensuing mayhem through the kaleidoscope of Clarie’s world. The play culminates in a cacophony of revelations, proving that everything is not what it appears to be. “Fuddy Meers” is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York. Admission is $12 for general audience members and $10 for students, faculty/staff and seniors. Hypertension Screening Program, 3 to 6 p.m., Student Center Cafeteria

Triton College’s Health Services Department, in conjunction with the Associate Degree of Nursing Students, will conduct a Hypertension Screening Program that will include information on what is a healthy blood pressure rate and ways to regulate one’s blood pressure. Participants can get their blood pressure checked. Those at risk of hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, will receive follow-up care by Triton’s Health Services, as well as recommendations to maintain healthy blood pressure. Automotive Technology Open House, 7 p.m., Room T-154 of the Industrial Careers Building (T Building)

Triton College’s Automotive Technology program will hold an open house for prospective students interested in learning about the college’s NATEF-certified program, including tours of the program’s labs and classrooms and information about its sponsorship with General Motors Corp. and AC Delco. Job Club Meeting, 11 a.m., Room B-140 of the Student Center (B-Building)

Triton College’s Career Services Center will have its monthly Job Club meeting, in an effort to help people with their job search, while also serving as a support group. Fall Student Exhibition, Triton College Art Gallery

See the work of Triton’s talented students during the 2013-2014 academic year. Triton College offers instruction in drawing, painting, ceramics, design, photography and graphic design. Put all of those together and you have a great offering of art in many forms. A large portion of the works on display will also be available for purchase. A closing reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the art gallery. Light refreshments will be served. Winter Band Concert, 7:30 p.m., Performing Arts Center of the Robert M. Collins Center (R-Building)

The program features the Triton College Community Band in its annual winter program. The 40-member group performs a wide variety of pieces that represent the principal periods that make up the history of the modern concert band. This includes overtures, marches, colorful program pieces, and instrumental features together with current pop styles. A portion of the program will be devoted to familiar holiday selections. From Oct. 4-27, the Cernan Earth and Space Center brings an array of new and favorite shows to inform and entertain families on astronomy at the planetarium. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. (except Oct. 12 for the Monthly Skywatch) and 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sundays. Tour the nighttime sky during Cernan Earth and Space Center’s Monthly Skywatch program. The evening includes a presentation on the latest news from NASA in the space center’s dome theater and outdoor skygazing with telescopes focused on the waxing gibbous moon and perhaps an assortment of star clusters and double stars. Admission for the indoor planetarium portion of the Monthly Skywatch is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 2 to 12 and senior citizens ages 55 and older. The outdoor telescope session is free.
