What’s coming up at Triton College

River Grove, Ill. – The following are events coming up at Triton College. All of the events listed are free and open to the public and will take place on Triton’s River Grove campus, located at 2000 Fifth Ave., unless otherwise stated.

March 24 through April 18

“Robots, Machines, and Drawings – Oh My!”, Triton College Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Building (J-Building)

Longtime collaborators in creativity and robotics Michael Erzen of Triton College’s art program and Antigone Sharris of the college’s engineering technology program will bring together work from the students in their two disciplines. A combination of tech, talent and creativity will be in motion for all to enjoy. Be ready for fun! A closing reception is from 6 to 9 p.m. on April 18, in the gallery. Triton College Kindergarten Open House, 3:30 to 5 p.m., Room G-110 of the G Building

Triton College’s Kindergarten program will host an open house for the fall 2014-2015 school year. Parents will have the opportunity to meet the teachers and tour the classroom, as well as learn about the full day Kindergarten program, which includes lunch and before and after school care. Parents will also be able to register for the program. Children need to be 5 years of age by Sept. 1, 2014, to be registered for the kindergarten program. Talking Service, 2 p.m., Room A-321 of the Triton College Library

Join in a discussion about service with veterans talking to veterans through the written experiences of veterans, as detailed in the anthology “Standing Down.” The discussion, open to everyone, is in conjunction with the Great Books Foundation. April 2

Green Drinks, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Room B-223 of the Student Center

The Triton College Sustainability Center will host its inaugural Green Drinks program on Wednesday, April 2, with guest speaker Tom Stoner, a former energy entrepreneur who authored the book “Small Change, Big Gains: Reflections of an Energy Entrepreneur.” Stoner will discuss how climate change mitigation is possible and will result in a more prosperous pathway to a sustainable future. Stoner is also the founder of Project Butterfly, a research organization dedicated to finding business solutions to climate change. The event will have a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres. Jazz Spectacular, 7:30 p.m., Performing Arts Center of the Robert M. Collins Center *CORRECTION*

Come hear world-class jazz performed by Triton College students and faculty. Triton students, local high school students and members of the community are all invited to participate in clinics and masterclasses as part of the day’s events topped off by a superlative concert in the evening. James Davis is the conductor. Last year’s concert was a hit! General admission is $7 and $5 for students and seniors. Attendees can enjoy a free masterclass at 4 p.m. prior to the concert. April 9

Discover Triton: Explore Your Opportunities, 6 p.m., Room B-130A&B of the Student Center (B-Building)

Learn about the various programs available at Triton College with this exploratory series that highlights a new area of study each month. Students can tour classrooms and labs of particular programs and meet faculty, as well as learn about the admission and financial aid process to enroll in Triton classes. On April 9, the School of Arts and Sciences will be explored, including such programs as early childhood education, psychology, social work, biology, and more. Reservations are recommended. April 10-12

Triton Troupers Circus, 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 1 p.m. Saturday, Robert M. Collins Center Gymnasium

The Triton Troupers Circus returns for its annual show from April 10-12 on Triton College’s main campus in River Grove. Expect an explosive, daring show that will provide fun for the whole family, featuring such circus acts as tightrope walking, trampoline, stunts, cycling, juggling, the gymwheel, trapeze, teeterboard, stilt walking and clowns. Saturday’s 1 p.m. show will be interpreted for the hearing impaired by the Center for Students with Disabilities of Triton College. Doors open an hour before the shows. April 12

RSVP Pancake Breakfast, 8 a.m. to noon, Room R-221 of the Robert M. Collins Center

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of West Suburban Cook and Southern DuPage Counties will host its annual Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, April 12, which will include an opportunity for families to have a day of fun at the Triton Troupers Circus, which begins at 1 p.m. Tickets for breakfast only is $4 in advance and $5 at the door. A special combination price for breakfast and circus admission is $8 in advance and $10 at the door. All proceeds benefit the RSVP program. Annual Student Art Exhibition, Triton College Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Building (J-Building)

The Annual Student Art Exhibition is the annual celebration of creativity at Triton College. Students working in all media at the college are invited to share their best work of the year. Recent additions to the show include live demonstrations of web design and screenings of student-produced short films. A closing reception is from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 13 in the gallery. Prepare for the Job Fair workshop, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Room B-223 of the Student Center

Put your best foot forward with your career search with Triton College’s Prepare for the Job Fair workshop that will provide tips and suggestions on how to land the job. Hosted by Triton College’s Career Services Department, in conjunction with the Alumni Relations Office, the workshop is a precursor to the Job Fair on May 1 held on Triton’s campus. Blood Drive and Tissue/Organ and Bone Marrow Donor Registry, Student Center Cafeteria

You have the power to save a life! Triton College is hosting a blood drive and a bone marrow and organ/tissue donor registry for all who’d like to contribute on April 23. Blood Drive: Blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh 110 lbs., and be in general good health. Donors should eat breakfast or lunch prior to donating and bring identification. Organ and Tissue Donor Registry: The registry, hosted by the Illinois Secretary of State’s Organ and Tissue Donor Program, is especially in need of donors with a diverse racial or ethnic background. The registry will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bone Marrow Registry: Donors must be between the ages of 18 and 60, meet the health guidelines and be willing to donate to any patient in need. Upon meeting the above criteria, one’s cheek will be swabbed to match the cells against a patient’s cells waiting for a donor. You will then be placed on the donor list. Job Fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Student Center Cafeteria

Triton College’s Career Services Department will hold its annual Job Fair on May 1, with more than 60 employers looking for qualified job candidates to suit a variety of industries and businesses. Employers expected to be at the fair include Chicago Tribune, Cintas, Pace, Hyatt and many more. Professional dress attire is strongly encouraged, and attendees are asked to bring plenty of copies of their resume.  The event is free for all job seekers. Triton College’s Performing Arts Department presents “Crimes of the Heart”, Cox Auditorium (Room J-108), Fine Arts Building (J-Building)

Triton College’s Performing Arts Department will perform “Crimes of the Heart” by Beth Henley from May 2-4 and 8-11 in Triton’s Cox Auditorium. “Crimes of the Heart” follows the three MaGrath sisters who are brought back together due to their grandfather’s failing health. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at 30 and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, returns home after a failed singing career; and Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and Babe’s awkward lawyer who has a crush on her in this hilarious and touching production. Director is Kurt Naebig. Open House, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Student Center

Triton College will hold its annual Open House, providing plenty of information for prospective students interested in learning what Triton has to offer. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the campus and meet faculty, staff and students, as well as talk with admission and financial aid representatives to learn options on how to finance their education. The event will also have a raffle for prospective students to win a three-credit hour course. Reservations are recommended by calling (708) 456-0300, Ext. 3130.

 

May 3

A Step for Vets, 1 to 4 p.m., On the mounds, west  side of Triton College’s campus

Join Triton College in taking another step toward ending veteran homelessness in the surrounding communities when the college holds its Step for Vets community-walk and donation drive for the second year. A Step for Vets will begin with an opening ceremony, followed by a warm-up Zumba class at 1:30 p.m. The walk will begin at 2 p.m. Attendees can also enjoy a children’s activity area, a DJ, information from community resources that serve veterans, refreshments and live entertainment by Chicago’s Bailiff. Plus, food from Clavio’s will be available for purchase with proceeds benefitting the Hines VA Hospital. Registration is free. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place inside the Robert M. Collins Center, located on the east side of Triton’s campus. The evening includes a presentation on the latest news from NASA in the space center’s dome theater and outdoor skygazing with telescopes. Admission for the indoor planetarium portion of the Monthly Skywatch is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 2 to 12 and senior citizens ages 55 and older. The outdoor telescope session is free.
